never hurt anyone. and it certainly didn't hurt me this a.m. when i woke up around 4 a.m. t gets up early, and sometimes i can go to sleep again, but mostly not. my body does a silent protest, so i just lay in bed for the rest of the time until my alarm goes off. usually i watch t.v., but today, my mind was racing. i started thinking about jobs and what i will be doing with my career throughout all time.
lofty thoughts, i know.
i started doing the math in my head of the amount of hours i was going to need to work in real estate to pull off a school counseling job for the first few years. it was not a pretty sight/thought. i got the thoughts out of my head, because i needed more sleep...
came to work and pulled out a school calendar and counted out days that i'd be working in real estate full-time and days that i'd be there for 2 hours and then doubled that with the insane thought that i'd need to work 4 hours a day in real estate (2 before school started and 2 after). when it came down to it, to add up to what i make now....i will need to do the 4 hours a day. this sucks...but to get started, i have to start somewhere. this would mean, that i would be at work at 6:30a.m. to 8:30a.m., then go to school, then come back at 4p.m. and stay til 6 p.m.
i filtered through all my options: get another degree....i already thought about that, realized that i'm in the field i need to be in...it just so happens to pay beans. open up an EBAY selling company...this, although the most exciting out of the bunch, is not realistic, and i'm sure i would find out that the school counseling thing was BIG money compared to that one. stay solely in real estate....this is such a fickle market and in general, not a very stable situation. work for a county system....these pay more, but are very hard jobs, in my opinion.
do i need to make the same amount that i make now? in all likelihood, no. i do some spending on things throughout the year, that definitely do not need to take place. with us only doing a couple trips a year to marathons, i really am saving quite a bit comparatively. do i need massages? no. do i need my hair cut? no. could i make it on less money....yes.
you may wonder what i spend my money on that is frivolous, and i've gone through the list, and come to the conclusion, that i really don't. I'm not a big shopper, not a big spender, and since we've reined in the spending on the groceries, it's been great. the fact is we live in a home that is made for a bigger income than that of a school counselor....unless they've been in the field for a few years. i like our home, i like our neighbors, i wouldn't trade it.
and i think that all things worth something, are worth a bit of sacrificing, don't you think?

You'll figure it out. I never, ever thought I'd be able to live on what I'm making now. But I do.
