can't always be what you thought

this week and weekend didn't turn out to be what we thought they would.  they were intended to be a great vacation for our friends and a great kind of first vacation for us.  they turned out to really be neither of those things.  i'd say that it is hard taking a vacation, every other day of the week.  it almost didn't seem too much like a vacation.

we couldn't really get out on the trails at all, to do anything.  they were so flooded everywhere, it made it really hard.  we set out for a great bike ride on Wednesday a.m. and first, saw a 10 foot diameter tree, down in the middle of the trail.  we went through some weeds with the 6 year old little one, got eaten alive by mosquitoes, then rode....a few feet.....til we hit water.  and more water.....and suddenly, the 6 year old was half covered by water, yet still riding her bike.  she was a trooper.  we went further, but turned around finally, as the bike trail became a river, literally, with a current.  we started riding back and i'm not kidding you....there were tadpoles swimming upstream on the trail.

this is especially hard when you have kids around.  to have weather dictating everything you do...it's tough.  more so when you are trying to wear out a ADHD child that is not on their meds.  i have worked in schools before and obviously heard of ADHD.  it's a real thing, i've seen signs of it in kids, but most of the ones i've worked with, have been on their meds.  i'll just say that it's a hard thing for parents to deal with.

a variety of things have made me want kids and not want them...all at once.  if that makes any sense, and i'm sure it doesn't to most people.

we tried our hardest to make things fun and activity filled...i don't know if we did it to the extent that our friends wanted...i sure hope so.  but it's hard for people that don't have kids to pick up that role suddenly....especially if they are not your kids and you are not used to them.  i don't want to get the label of the crotchety old couple that didn't have kids because they couldn't hack it.

I would hope that your friends realize that because you are childless, you wouldn't be able to suddenly pretend like you knew what kids would want to do for the entire weekend. If they were worried about what you were or were not doing, they probably would have said something or offered to plan the weekend themselves.

It is difficult hanging out with people that have kids when you don't. Hopefully people with kids remember how it used to be....

i hope so, nsc. i think it's hard, but harder when one of them is really active. t and i are active every weekend, we go non-stop, but this was a whole different level.

I hear what you're saying. But when people that have kids descend on you, they usually expect that they will have to do some adjusting themselves and take the lead at times. I'm sure they had a great time. Sometimes just getting out of dodge and seeing new things is vacation enough.

a little something about me and the life i choose to live!
