what we pass on....

it's weird, the things that we pass on...

t and i talk about this a lot.  or maybe i just talk about it a lot.  and maybe he listens.

i think it is funny, the things we remember about people that we have had in our lives.  most of all, i think about how mortified they would be, if they were to hear the way that we remember them.

t and i have "laughing so hard we're crying" stories about people...the one that didn't like what they were eating, so they, in the middle of a restaurant, proceeded to get the food out of their mouth in a nasty way.   the one that said "phenomenal" a lot.  the one that, when they got mad, turned purple.  they one that had me set up his fly fishing equipment...then dumped me.  the one that was an elf for santa during christmas.  the one that made that annoying noise when she was annoyed.  the one that stole the mustard. the one that said he was 6'2", but was really 5'6"....tops.

what is funny about all of these people...is that we don't remember their names.  or maybe we do now...after a while of thinking.  but really, what we remember about them, are these THINGS.

so, why not be the person who people remember by name?  i would much rather be me, and remembered as such, than the person that ____________ (fill in the blank).

i drove to dinner one time, to a place that rarely has parking.  t asked how the hell i got parking there?  i said, " i don't know.  i just thought it would be there and expected it, and it was."   i told  a story about how when i was in grad school, and we went out every night, i drove and we parked right in front of where our destination was.  it wasn't even a thought in my head that there wouldnt' be a space there.  i expected there to be and for some reason, there always was.  i was known, among friends, as the person who never got "turned down" from a parking spot.  i know, i know, a great claim to fame.

in the end, i learned to not even put the thought out there, that i might NOT find a parking space.  why would i put that energy into the world?  why would i even be thinking things that were not the way that i wanted them to go?

long story short...don't give people a chance to call you "the person that........".  Make them remember who you are and what you thought, rather than the negative, strange nuances that we all have.

I don't know about this one. I mean, some of those memories about your friends and acquaintances are so darn funny. I'd rather be remembered for my quirks and the things that make me me, even if they are slightly off-center. I much prefer than to the alternative of being remembered as nice.

N-oh, i totally agree with you. the things i was talking about, obviously not in depth enough, were, for the most part, not at all off-center, but just either rude or mean things that people had done. i can assure you that none of the people would want to be remembered for those things. in fact, i guarantee you that most of the would be mortified. except maybe the guy that was the elf for santa. i defintely love to be remembered for the things that make me, me, and all of those things are unusual and different for everyone.

I think that unless you know a person very well, the things that you'll remember most about people are the things that make them different - whether it's good or bad. The only thing you can do is try to touch people's lives in a positive way, so that they'll remember you for that. But even then, you still won't please everybody.

I'm coming to this late, but i agree, it is better to be remembered for "odd, nice quirks" than mean, nasty, or annoying ones.

Wish it could always be so. We don't always have control over what others see & remember in us.

a little something about me and the life i choose to live!
